Greenwood & Boundary morning check: nomination period opens this week; smoke warning continues while nearest fire point drops from the feed
Sunday’s most time-sensitive civic item is the City of Greenwood election calendar. The official City elections page lists the 2026 general local election for Saturday, October 17, with one mayor and four councillors to be elected, and it lists the candidate nomination period as September 1-11, 2026. Ledge has not found an accepted official candidate list yet, so current officeholders should still be described as current officeholders, not automatic candidates.
The public-safety picture did not escalate in the official sources checked. Grand Forks and Rock Creek still show a YELLOW WARNING - AIR QUALITY object, but the Sunday forecast is cooler and improving: cloudy with a 40 percent chance of showers this morning, becoming a mix of sun and cloud this afternoon, with clearing late this evening and sunshine forecast Monday.
No Boundary-region evacuation notice was found in the DriveBC emergency-alert API or the EmergencyInfoBC text pull. The wildfire-map layer still needs watching, but the nearest returned point changed because N62026, yesterday’s closest Under Control record, was no longer returned in the current under-100-km pull. Do not describe that as resolved unless BC Wildfire Service publishes a separate update. N61738 is now the closest returned point at about 29.6 km, listed Under Control; N61319 and N61846 remain Out of Control about 41.7 km away; N51991 improved from Being Held to Under Control.
Roads stayed steady close to Greenwood. Spraggett Road remains the nearest closure, and the Highway 3 utility-work item about 23 km from Greenwood remains active. No new under-100-km DriveBC road item appeared against yesterday’s raw pull.
What changed since yesterday’s pull
- Election/candidates: the City election page makes this week important. Nomination period is listed for September 1-11, campaign period begins September 19, advance voting is listed for October 7, and General Voting Day is October 17 at McArthur Centre.
- Weather: the Yellow Air Quality warning continues for Grand Forks and Rock Creek, but Sunday’s forecast is cooler than Saturday and moves toward clearing tonight and sunny Monday.
- Emergency notices: no Boundary-region evacuation order or alert was found in the DriveBC emergency-alert API or EmergencyInfoBC text pull.
- Nearest fire-map point: N62026 was no longer returned in the under-100-km pull. Ledge treats that as a feed change only unless a separate official resolution is published.
- Wildfire status improvement: N51991 changed from Being Held to Under Control. N61319 and N61846 remain Out of Control about 41.7 km away; N52108 and N52085 remain small farther Out of Control map records around 80 km away.
- Roads: Spraggett Road and the Highway 3 utility-work item remain the closest road items; no new under-100-km road item appeared against yesterday’s raw pull.
- City source access: City public pages returned 200. Stage 2 water restrictions and the all-open-burning prohibition remain visible in page extracts.
- Council record: the browser-visible eSCRIBE calendar still shows September 8 Committee of the Whole and Regular Council meetings. The Regular Council popup showed the meeting time and Council Chamber location, but no agenda/package/minutes links were visible in the snapshot.
Election and City Hall desk
- Official election dates now need front-page attention: nomination period September 1-11; campaign period begins September 19; advance voting October 7; general voting October 17.
- The City page says voters will elect one mayor and four councillors. Ledge should watch for the first official candidate list or nomination package update and update the Greenwood Votes tracker as soon as names are confirmed.
- Use careful labels: current mayor/council members are current officeholders only until an official accepted nomination list, direct named statement, or other verifiable candidate evidence is available.
- The City election page text includes some generic or inconsistent wording in its FAQ section; use Elections BC and the City election officer/page for final voter guidance rather than copying unclear FAQ text uncritically.
Roads, fire rules and water
- Spraggett Road: DriveBC still lists utility-work closure between Carson Road and Almond Gardens Road West until September 30.
- Highway 3: utility work about 23 km from Greenwood remains listed through September 18, with single-lane alternating traffic, traffic control and a 60 km/h speed restriction.
- Fire rules: the City alert still lists all open burning prohibited, including campfires of any size, Category 2 and 3 open fires, burn barrels and cages, fireworks, sky lanterns and other listed items. The notice says the prohibition remains in effect until noon on October 31, 2026, or until rescinded.
- Water: Stage 2 watering rules remain visible on City pages: even-numbered addresses on Tuesdays and Saturdays, odd-numbered addresses on Wednesdays and Sundays, automatic sprinklers midnight to 6 a.m., and manual sprinklers/outside taps midnight to 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. to midnight.

Greenwood Museum, Greenwood Public Library, Greenwood Elementary and SD51 public websites loaded during this check. Greenwood Elementary remains a good follow-up source for a positive community story about school volunteers, reading, hot lunch, field trips, arts, sports and school functions if a named school, PAC, parent or volunteer contact can confirm current needs and provide publishable details.
The Greenwood fire-department leadership question remains an unconfirmed community question. This run did not find official-source text suitable for confirmed reporting. Ledge should keep asking careful questions, but should not state resignation or leadership-change claims as fact until a named source, council record, department statement or official notice confirms details.
