Greenwood & Boundary morning check: smoke warning clears, but a new nearby fire-map point appears as nomination week opens
Monday’s useful local update is mixed: the official weather warning object that was showing for Grand Forks and Rock Creek yesterday is no longer active in the morning pull, but the forecast still uses the word hazy and calls for east wind gusting to 40 km/h. Treat this as an improvement from the warning state, not as an all-clear for smoke-sensitive residents.
The nearby wildfire-map feed also changed. N61738, yesterday’s closest returned point, was no longer in the under-100-km pull; a new small point, N52140, appeared about 53.8 km from Greenwood and is listed Out of Control at 0.02 ha, reported August 30. N52053 improved from Being Held to Under Control, while N61319 and N61846 remain Out of Control about 41.7 km away. Ledge found no Boundary-region evacuation notice in the DriveBC emergency-alert API or the EmergencyInfoBC text pull.
Civic attention now shifts to Greenwood’s 2026 election calendar. The City election page lists candidate nominations for September 1-11, campaign period beginning September 19, advance voting October 7 and General Voting Day October 17. Ledge has not found an accepted official candidate list yet, so current officeholders should still be described as current officeholders, not automatic candidates.
What changed since yesterday’s pull
- Weather: Grand Forks and Rock Creek changed from a Yellow Air Quality warning object yesterday to no active warning object in this morning’s DriveBC weather pull. Forecast text still mentions haze overnight and Tuesday, plus east wind gusting to 40 km/h.
- Emergency notices: DriveBC’s emergency-alert API returned an empty list, and the EmergencyInfoBC text pull did not show Greenwood, Midway, Grand Forks, Rock Creek, Christina Lake, Boundary or Kootenay Boundary evacuation items.
- Wildfire map: N52140 appeared in the under-100-km pull about 53.8 km from Greenwood, listed Out of Control, 0.02 ha, reported August 30.
- Wildfire map improvements/changes: N52053 changed from Being Held to Under Control; N51996 stayed Out of Control but changed from 0.54 ha to 0.75 ha; N61738 was no longer returned in the current under-100-km pull. Dropped points are treated only as feed changes unless BC Wildfire Service publishes a separate update.
- Roads: Spraggett Road remains the closest closure and the Highway 3 utility-work item about 23 km from Greenwood remains active. No new under-100-km DriveBC road item appeared against yesterday’s raw pull.
- City source access: City public pages returned 200. Stage 2 water restrictions and the all-open-burning prohibition remain visible in page extracts.
- Council record: the browser-visible eSCRIBE calendar still shows September 8 Committee of the Whole and Regular Council meetings. The Regular Council popup showed date, time and Council Chamber location, but no agenda/package/minutes links were visible in the snapshot.
Election and City Hall desk
- Candidate nomination period opens Tuesday, September 1 and runs to September 11 according to the City election page.
- The City page says voters will elect one mayor and four councillors. Ledge should update Greenwood Votes when an official accepted nomination list, candidate statement or other verifiable candidate evidence appears.
- Use careful labels: current mayor/council members are current officeholders only until an accepted nomination list or named confirmation is available.
- The City news pull still shows Stage 2 watering rules and the all-open-burning prohibition. The open-burning notice says the ban remains in effect until noon on October 31, 2026, or until rescinded.
Roads, fire rules and water
- Spraggett Road: DriveBC still lists utility-work closure between Carson Road and Almond Gardens Road West until September 30.
- Highway 3: utility work about 23 km from Greenwood remains listed through September 18, with single-lane alternating traffic, traffic control and a 60 km/h speed restriction.
- Weather: no active Grand Forks/Rock Creek warning object appeared in the morning pull, but haze remains in the forecast text. Residents with health concerns should follow official air-quality and health guidance rather than relying on a single morning website scrape.
- Fire map: N61319 and N61846 remain Out of Control at about 41.7 km; new small N52140 is Out of Control at about 53.8 km. These map records are not evacuation instructions.
- Water: Stage 2 watering rules remain visible on City pages: even-numbered addresses on Tuesdays and Saturdays, odd-numbered addresses on Wednesdays and Sundays, automatic sprinklers midnight to 6 a.m., and manual sprinklers/outside taps midnight to 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. to midnight.
Community desk
Greenwood Museum, Greenwood Public Library, Greenwood Elementary and SD51 public websites loaded during this check. A useful positive follow-up for the first week of September would be a school/community-start story: school volunteers, PAC needs, youth activities, reading support, hot lunch, field trips, arts, sports or library tie-ins. It needs a named school, PAC, library, parent, volunteer or staff contact before publication as a confirmed feature.
The Greenwood fire-department leadership question remains an unconfirmed community question. This run did not find official-source text suitable for confirmed reporting. Ledge should keep asking careful questions, but should not state resignation or leadership-change claims as fact until a named source, council record, department statement or official notice confirms details.
