Greenwood & Boundary morning check: all open burning ban starts Thursday; heat and air-quality warnings continue
Wednesday’s official-source check found one clear Greenwood-specific change: the City of Greenwood is now posting an all-open-burning prohibition effective at 12:00 p.m. noon on Thursday, July 23, 2026.
The City notice says the ban includes campfires of any size, Category 2 and Category 3 open fires, burn barrels and burn cages, fireworks, sky lanterns, binary exploding targets, air curtain burners, carbonizers, controlled-air incinerators, and wood-fired devices such as hot tubs or pizza ovens unless properly vented through a flue incorporated into a building. Existing campfires and open fires must be out by the noon deadline.
Heat and smoke also remain front-page items. The DriveBC / Environment Canada regional records for Grand Forks and Rock Creek list both a yellow air-quality warning and a yellow heat warning, with Wednesday forecast smoke, high 38 C and UV index 9 or very high. Thursday is still forecast hot, with a high near 36 C and a chance of afternoon showers or thunderstorms.
What changed since Tuesday
- Greenwood fire rules: the City’s alert now says all open burning is prohibited beginning noon Thursday, July 23, and continuing until noon October 31, 2026, unless rescinded earlier.
- Weather: the Grand Forks and Rock Creek regional feeds now show both an air-quality warning and a heat warning. Tuesday’s heat/smoke caution therefore continues and has clearer air-quality-warning status.
- Wildfire map: the nearest DriveBC / BC Wildfire map entries to Greenwood in the morning pull were marked under control, including N61072 about 34.9 km away and N61067 about 36.6 km away. The closest out-of-control entry found in the map layer was N61030, about 69.3 km from Greenwood. None of the nearby entries checked were marked wildfire of note.
- Emergency notices: the DriveBC emergency-alert API returned an empty list. EmergencyInfoBC listed active heat, Amber Alert and wildfire emergency pages elsewhere in B.C., but the morning text pull did not find a Greenwood, Midway, Grand Forks, Rock Creek, Christina Lake or Boundary evacuation order or alert.
Roads, city notices and practical cautions
- Highway 3 / Paulson: DriveBC still lists paving between Paulson Bridge and Paulson Cross Country Recsite, about 46 km from Greenwood, with single-lane alternating traffic until July 30.
- Other road items: the morning proximity check found no Greenwood, Midway or Grand Forks closure. A Highway 3B construction item near Rossland and farther-west Highway 3 items remain on DriveBC.
- Water: City of Greenwood Stage 2 water restrictions remain posted. Even-numbered addresses water Tuesdays and Saturdays; odd-numbered addresses water Wednesdays and Sundays; the City alert still lists the permitted morning and evening watering windows.
- Reporting fires: the City notice directs residents to report wildfires, unattended campfires or open-burning violations to 1-800-663-5555, *5555 from a cellular phone, or through the BC Wildfire Service app.
Community follow-up desk
Founders Day still needs a proper community wrap: organizer photos, volunteer names, business impacts, parade notes and any heat/smoke observations from people who were there.
The Greenwood fire-department leadership question remains a community lead only. Automated Facebook checks still did not expose reliable post text or an official statement.
