Greenwood & Boundary morning check: burning ban is in effect; smoke warning continues
Friday’s official-source check keeps fire and smoke at the top of the Greenwood front page. The City of Greenwood’s all-open-burning prohibition is now in effect, and the Grand Forks/Rock Creek regional weather feed still lists a yellow air-quality warning.
The heat warning that appeared earlier this week was not present in the Grand Forks or Rock Creek warning events in the 6:32 a.m. pull, but the forecast is still hot and smoky: widespread smoke, a high near 35 C, humidex near 37, UV index 8 or very high, southwest wind gusting to 40 this afternoon, and a risk of thunderstorms with afternoon showers.
What changed since Wednesday
- Greenwood fire rules: the open-burning ban is no longer only upcoming; it took effect at noon Thursday, July 23, and the City says it remains in effect until noon October 31 unless rescinded earlier.
- Fire-centre page: the B.C. Southeast Fire Centre prohibitions page now shows last updated July 23, 2026. It continues to list campfires and Category 2/3 open fires as prohibited.
- Weather: Grand Forks and Rock Creek still show a yellow air-quality warning issued Friday July 24 at 10:52 UTC. The warning list did not show a heat-warning event in this morning’s pull, but the forecast remains hot with smoke and very high UV.
- Wildfire map: the closest DriveBC / BC Wildfire map entries found were N61067 about 36.6 km from Greenwood and N51038 about 52.3 km away, both marked under control. N51130, reported July 23, appeared about 65.2 km away and was marked out of control. N61030, about 69.3 km away, was marked being held. None of those entries were marked wildfire of note in the DriveBC layer.
- Emergency notices: the DriveBC emergency-alert API returned an empty list. EmergencyInfoBC showed heat and wildfire emergency pages elsewhere in B.C.; the text pull did not find a Greenwood, Midway, Grand Forks, Rock Creek, Christina Lake or Boundary evacuation order or alert.
Roads, water and city desk
- Highway 3 / Paulson: DriveBC still lists paving between Paulson Bridge and Paulson Cross Country Recsite, about 46 km from Greenwood, with single-lane alternating traffic until July 30.
- Other roads: the proximity check also found Highway 22 construction items and farther regional work, but no Greenwood, Midway or Grand Forks closure in the morning pull.
- Water: City of Greenwood Stage 2 water restrictions remain posted. Even-numbered addresses water Tuesdays and Saturdays; odd-numbered addresses water Wednesdays and Sundays. The City alert still lists midnight-to-6 a.m. automatic-sprinkler watering and the manual watering windows.
- City Hall: City news still showed the July 18 election-officials job posting as the newest conventional news item in the automated text pull. Mayor/council, staff-directory and council-meetings pages loaded, but no new meeting headline was found by the text check.
Community follow-up desk
Ledge still needs a human Founders Day wrap: organizer photos, volunteer names, business impacts, parade notes and heat/smoke observations from people who attended.
The Greenwood fire-department leadership question remains a community lead only. Automated Facebook checks did not expose reliable post text or an official statement. Ledge should continue asking careful questions, but should not state resignation or leadership-change claims as fact until a named source, council record, department statement or official notice confirms details.
