Greenwood morning check: province eases campfire rules, but the City burning ban still applies
Tuesday’s public-safety headline is a jurisdiction split readers should not miss. BC Wildfire Service says the Southeast Fire Centre Category 1 campfire prohibition is rescinded effective noon September 1, but the City of Greenwood’s own public alert still says All Open Burning Prohibited and includes campfires of any size inside the City until noon October 31 unless rescinded.
That means the practical Greenwood note is not “campfires are back.” It is: provincial Category 1 rules have eased across the Southeast Fire Centre, while Greenwood’s municipal/local prohibition remains posted in this morning’s City page pulls. Residents should follow the stricter local rule where it applies and check the City before lighting anything.
The fire-map and weather pull improved slightly but still deserves caution. Grand Forks and Rock Creek showed no active warning object again, with haze and east wind gusting to 40 km/h in the forecast. N52140, the small new point from yesterday, changed from Out of Control to Being Held. N51996, N52108 and N52085 also changed from Out of Control to Being Held. N61319 and N61846 remain Out of Control about 41.7 km from Greenwood. Ledge found no Boundary-region evacuation item in the DriveBC emergency-alert API or the EmergencyInfoBC text pull.
What changed since yesterday’s pull
- Fire rules: BC Wildfire Service published an August 31 notice saying Category 1 campfires are permitted again throughout the Southeast Fire Centre at noon September 1. Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited regionally.
- Greenwood local rule: City of Greenwood pages still show the July 23 all-open-burning prohibition, including campfires of any size, Category 2/3 fires, burn barrels, fireworks, sky lanterns and similar devices. The City notice says it remains in effect until noon October 31, 2026, or until rescinded.
- Weather: Grand Forks and Rock Creek again showed no active warning object in the morning DriveBC weather pull. Forecast text says hazy this afternoon, tonight and Wednesday, with east wind gusting to 40 km/h.
- Emergency notices: DriveBC’s emergency-alert API returned an empty list, and the EmergencyInfoBC text pull did not show Greenwood, Midway, Grand Forks, Rock Creek, Christina Lake, Boundary or Kootenay Boundary evacuation items.
- Wildfire map improvements: N52140 changed from Out of Control to Being Held at about 53.8 km. N51996, N52108 and N52085 also changed from Out of Control to Being Held. Dropped or improved map entries are not evacuation all-clears unless the issuing agency says so.
- Continuing wildfire-map watch: N61319 and N61846 remain Out of Control about 41.7 km away. These are map-layer records, not evacuation instructions.
- Roads: Spraggett Road remains the closest closure, and the Highway 3 utility-work item about 23 km from Greenwood remains active. No new under-100-km DriveBC road item appeared against yesterday’s raw pull.
- Council record: the automated eSCRIBE endpoint again returned HTTP 500. Browser re-check was blocked by the local Chrome remote-debugging permission prompt in this unattended run, so no new meeting-document claim is made here.
City and election desk
- Candidate nominations are now in the September 1-11 window shown on the City election page. Ledge still needs an official accepted-candidate list or named candidate confirmation before changing officeholders into candidate profiles.
- The City page says voters will elect one mayor and four councillors, with advance voting October 7 and General Voting Day October 17.
- Stage 2 water restrictions remain visible on City pages: even-numbered addresses water Tuesdays and Saturdays; odd-numbered addresses water Wednesdays and Sundays; automatic sprinklers midnight to 6 a.m.; manual sprinklers/outside taps midnight to 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. to midnight.
- Greenwood’s local fire rule is the reader-facing rule to verify today: despite the provincial Category 1 easing, the City public alert still says campfires of any size are prohibited inside Greenwood unless/until the City rescinds or updates that notice.
Roads, weather and fire map
- Spraggett Road: DriveBC still lists utility-work closure between Carson Road and Almond Gardens Road West until September 30.
- Highway 3: utility work about 23 km from Greenwood remains listed through September 18, with single-lane alternating traffic, traffic control and a 60 km/h speed restriction.
- Weather: no active Grand Forks/Rock Creek warning object appeared, but haze remains in the forecast. Smoke-sensitive residents should use official health and air-quality guidance, not only a morning scrape.
- Fire map: N52140 is now Being Held; N61319 and N61846 remain Out of Control. None of the nearest checked entries were marked wildfire of note in the pulled map data.
